The Warship Scam

It’s just that scams seem to be here to stay. Italian scams. There was Bofors ,Augusta Westland ,the Italian soldiers who went scot free after the murder of some Indian fishermen. Like the growing national passion for Italian food, we seem to be importing trouble even as we gorge on olive oil. National security be damned. Most of us sit glued to our TV sets wondering about this country even as we see pictures of warships sailing on the high seas and the reporter’s screech about there being a scam.

The facts are that the Italian shipping company -Fincantieri— has been favoured by the UPA government. This has led to the procurement of ships that are made of low grade commercial steel ,instead of the high grade military steel that should have been used. This small omission is of great consequence and the so called whistle blower who has blown the lid off the scam is really flabbergasted. In one of the news articles he reportedly expressed extreme wonder that a whistle blower was needed to detect a lapse which was so extremely   obvious. Also, significant .If we remember some deaths of young flight officers as well as those in the navy, we know that this could certainly have been avoided. Do we need to remind the tax payers that it is their money which is being used to feather the nest of treason?

The matter, I feel has gone beyond the nation’s tolerance level. We are a nation of patient sufferers, but I feel that this constant onslaught of scams, even if Italian in nature, needs a consensus. The present government may have helped to blow the lid off the secret but it is certainly guilty of underplaying the seriousness of the crime. Especially, if it repeats itself. This cyclical repetition seems to ring ominous bells for the security of the nation. The people who are involved have got used to this cycle. They are arrogant enough either to shift the blame or to lie low till the whole thing blows off. Vive la Scam. In true Indian- Italian style family feelings reign supreme. Especially the concerns of one special family. Everyone seems to rush to the aid of this one special family .We wait each time for a rival government to give them a clean chit and go back to self-destructing criticism. We keep lashing ourselves with criticism .India cannot progress because of its hungry , illiterate janta. The masses of people, who slave each day to keep the scams alive with the sweat of their brows.

Like the legendary queen bee, the family has a “mama” or a queen. Meanwhile ,the drones in the family have been sufficiently scolded and we are to see the birth of the next queen, “Indian- Italian “ in origin. The common man should be asking as to when can we get rid of this cycle? The cycle of scams , the rush to save the family and again the sacrifice of the nation to fulfil the queen bee’s desire. As we collectively suffer another heat stroke in a severe summer,we rush for cover from nature. Dips in the ganges , Ice- Creams, foreign vacations are not going to save us during security lapses. Why think of any kind of win in combat situations when your very weapons are bound to fail? The ships of war would disintegrate even as the enemy approaches.A memory pokes me again. The defeat at the hands of China in 1962 ,when many soldiers reported the lack of weapons in crucial times. Mir Jafar your spirit will live on and a thousand celebrations of freedom will not help us in a final defeat.
