BJP Rocks In First Phase Of Orrisa Panchayat Elections
Though the voting for last phase of Zilla Parishad elections in Odisha is yet to be held on February 21, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has already secured decent number of seats in the first phase. As the tally goes currently, BJP has 71 seats in it’s kitty, followed by Congress which has 9 seats. However, Naveen Patnaik’s Biju Janata Dal (BJD) is leading with 94 seats of 188 seats which went in for polls in phase 1.
According to News 18, BJD had won 651, Congress 128 and BJP only 36 in the previous elections which were held in 2012.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi had in his Kannauj rally also thanked people of Odisha for believing in him and giving BJP “unprecedented support.”
This further boosts BJP’s voter base in the post-demonetization era. Earlier too BJP swept local bodies elections in Gujarat by capturing 107 seats out of total 123 seats which went for polls in different parts of the state. Whereas in Maharashtra too BJP made big gains in the key civic elections by winning 851 of 3,705 seats across 147 municipal councils and 17 panchayats in phase 1.
This could further strengthen BJP’s confidence as the election battle is being fought in five states of the country.
